Still Haven’t Filed? You May Still Qualify for Valuable Tax Credits

Good news for U.S. citizens living abroad—your tax filing deadline is June 15. While any taxes owed were due by April 15, expats automatically receive a two-month extension to file. If you haven’t submitted your return yet, there’s still time to take advantage of key tax credits that can lower your liability or increase your refund.

If you didn’t owe taxes, there are no penalties for filing now. And if you’re expecting a refund, the IRS gives you up to three years to claim it—but the sooner you file, the better.

Tax Credits You Can Still Claim:

  • Child Tax Credit (CTC): Up to $2,000 per qualifying child under age 17.
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC): For low- to moderate-income workers; eligibility depends on income and household size.
  • Foreign Tax Credit (FTC): A must for expats who paid taxes to another country—this credit helps avoid double taxation.
  • Education Credits (AOTC & Lifetime Learning): Reduce your tax bill if you or a dependent paid qualified education expenses.

💡 Why Tax Credits Matter:
Credits reduce your tax bill dollar-for-dollar—and some are refundable, meaning they could boost your refund even if you don’t owe taxes.
